Considering Change: A Practice of Awareness, Faith, and Action
I’d like you to consider change as we move through this new season.
On the East Coast of North America, some of us are noticing the natural world starting to change form. The light is different. The air is shifting. Something is moving, even if it’s subtle.
Have you heard these expressions? “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” “Old habits die hard.” “Better the hell you know than the heaven you don’t.” “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Which one is your favorite?
We have so many expressions and stories about change that it must be an important part of recognizing your feelings and thoughts about making an update.
So let’s practice changing perspective.
I’d like you to start by simply noticing your thoughts and the feelings in your body when you think about what you’d like to transform.
For example, a thought may occur to you that you’d like to take a trip to visit your family in Texas for a change of pace. Then your very smart brain starts to create reasons why it is inconvenient… and those TSA lines are too long.
Because you have some mindful practices within yourself, you might pause and wonder:
Is this really why I can’t decide what to do?
You can make some charts or lists using questions such as:
Why do I want to go now?
When do I want to go?
What are my options?
Why does this feel like a good (or bad) idea?
I encourage you to take a minute or two to stop worrying—and to let yourself be indecisive, with faith that you can be still and also be certain.
Changes in your day-to-day routines require both faith and action.
It can help to write out what changes you would like, and then notice what you feel as you write. Does the action of writing bring up something in your body?
If you notice fear or dread, it would be good to ask if that is really your thought—or if you are carrying around feelings and beliefs from someone else.
It is possible to focus on those thoughts and step into your sovereign self… to send them away from you to the light. Then ask the Creator—the source of creative, unconditional love—for a replacement with safety and love.
Take your cues from the natural world.
Seeds burst open when the timing and conditions are right. They don’t rush themselves.
Be mindful of your own fears or blocks around changing.
And imagine that your faith is a muscle—one that gets stronger every time you use it.
As I think of us working together to bring more love into the world, I am surrounding you with some active anti-procrastination energy! ✨
