A Change in Perspective: Finding Steadiness Through Breath and Nature
This time of year can feel full. We may be trying to enjoy the final weeks of summer while also thinking about everything waiting for us in the months ahead. Our schedules begin to shift, responsibilities call for our attention, and even an ordinary day can start to feel more difficult than it should.
Perhaps you can relate. You may notice that you are moving through your days with a sense of pressure, trying to keep up with what needs to be done while your thoughts move from one concern to the next. When stress begins to build, our perspective can become very narrow. We see the difficulty in front of us, but we may lose sight of the support, beauty, and possibility surrounding us.
This is often a sign that it is time to pause—not because everything around you has suddenly become easy, but because a small change in perspective can help you meet the moment differently.
One of the simplest ways to begin is by becoming aware of your breath. When we are stressed, the breath often becomes shallow without our noticing. We may tense our shoulders, tighten our jaw, or hold our breath as if we are preparing for the next challenge. Bringing our attention back to the breath reminds the body that it is safe to soften, even if only for a moment.
It can also be helpful to step outside and look at a plant or a tree. Notice the leaves reaching toward the light. Notice the roots holding the plant steadily in the earth. The plant receives what it needs from the world around it—sunlight, water, air, and the nourishment of the soil—without questioning whether it deserves to be here.
You are here on purpose, too.
Like the plants and trees, you are part of the natural world. You are supported by the earth beneath you, the air moving through your lungs, and the creative Love that brought you into being. Stress may cause you to temporarily lose touch with that connection, but it does not take the connection away.
The next time your day feels overwhelming, I invite you to try this simple practice:
Pause and take one slow, intentional breath, allowing your shoulders and jaw to soften.
Choose a nearby plant or tree and notice its leaves, its shape, and the way it receives what it needs.
Feel your feet connected to the earth and remind yourself, “I am steady. I am supported. I am here on purpose.”
You do not have to force yourself to feel calm. Simply notice what happens when you give your attention to something beyond the stressful thought. Perhaps your breath deepens. Perhaps your body softens. Perhaps the situation that felt impossible begins to look a little different.
Changing your perspective does not mean ignoring what is difficult. It does not mean pretending that you are not tired, worried, or overwhelmed. It means creating enough space around the difficulty to remember that it is not the whole of your experience. There is still beauty nearby. There is still support available. There is still wisdom within you.
A tree can be moved by the wind without losing its connection to the earth. In the same way, you can move through uncertainty without losing your connection to yourself and your connection with the divine. You may bend, adjust, rest, or ask for help. None of those things mean that you are failing. They are part of responding to life with awareness and compassion.
As we move through August, notice when stress begins to narrow your view. Give yourself permission to pause, breathe, and look toward something living. Let the plants and trees remind you that steadiness does not always mean remaining untouched by change. Sometimes it means staying connected to your roots while allowing yourself to move with what is happening around you.
You are steady. You are connected to the earth. You are surrounded by the Creator’s unconditional love, and you are here on purpose. What sparks come up for you as you consider this? Let me know if I may be a part of your journey, as a support and guide.
With love,
